Cultivator, Inc., a literacy nonprofit serving Northeastern North Carolina, invites area high school students to
submit works of short fiction and poetry to our upcoming Roanoke Chowan Literary Festival.
The student portion of the 2nd Annual Roanoke Chowan Literary Festival will be held Friday, April 4, 2025 from 10:00AM to 3:00PM at Edenton United Methodist Church. The focus of the Festival is to promote youth participation in the literary arts and creative writing in the nine county Roanoke Chowan region: Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Halifax, Hertford, Martin, Northampton, Warren, and Washington counties. The Festival’s program will include panels featuring award winning writers with connections to the Roanoke Chowan region, and readings of short fiction and poetry works by area high school students. This event is free and open to the public.
The Festival was named to honor the historic Roanoke Chowan Group of Writers and Allied Artists. It was formed in 1948 as an informal gathering of writers, musicians, painters, and patrons of the arts. The Festival recognizes the rich history of literature and culture in our region and encourages young people to take part in the creative arts.
High school students are invited to submit original works of short fiction and poetry to the Festival. There are no length or word count requirements. These submissions will be reviewed by our readers and three outstanding works of short fiction and three outstanding works of poetry will be awarded $100 each and the writers will be invited to attend the festival and read their work to attendees. The winning student writers will also participate in two pre-Festival virtual learning sessions with our readers to prepare to present their submissions at the Festival.
Submissions can be sent via email to cultivatornc@gmail.com with “RCLF submission” in the subject line. Hard copy submissions can be mailed to Cultivator, attention RCLF, 1228 East Main Street, Murfreesboro, NC 27855. The deadline to receive submissions is March 1, 2025.
